  1. Chapter 3 Connecting to the Internet

  2. Connecting your computer 1) Connecting to LANs: • Dial-in • TV wires • Offers higher-speed 2) Access the Internet (not via a Network): • Dial-in to ISP: Services are limited • Dial-in with “SLIP, PPP”: full Internet connections • ISDN: 64kbps – 128kbps • ADSL: a newer very-high speed technology • Cable Modem: using the television cable to connect up to 100 times faster than regular connections

  3. How ISDN Works? Using Telephone wires Extra payment Popular (ISDN) Integrated Services Digital Network Requires telephone companies to install special equipment High-Speed ISDN Modem

  4. How ISDN Works? • ISDN Modem: • A piece of hardware • Normal Modems transform digital signals into analog signals that can be sent over analog telephone lines • In “ISDN modem” only the digital data is sent • ISDN Access: • Basic Rate Interface “BRI” • 2B+D

  5. Basic Rate Interface “BRI” • The most common ISDN Access • Divides telephone line into three logical channels: • Two “64kbps B” channels • One “16kbps D” channel It referred to as: (2B + D) • D channel sends routing information while the two B channels send data

  6. The Net/ TV Connection • TV and Internet have begun to merge, using: • Cable modem • Receiver’s facilities • Allow browsing the Net through TV Set Ex. WebTV • Set-top box: a new technology that connects TV to the Net via a modem • It takes the signals from the modems • Send it to the TV • Then, you can browse the Web while watching TV, by using the Remote Control

  7. How NCs work? • Network Computers will cost less than traditional systems • Does not include Hard Disk or CD-ROM Drive • Files or Software doesn’t stored on NC, but on special secure NC Servers: • Manage storing files • Deliver data & software • May be used with special “Smart Cards” for security reasons • NCs Corporations: Oracle Corporation

  8. Advantage of NCs
