  2. 1. A principle of ecology is “We all live Downstream.” Explain. • Everything is related to everything else. The simplest disturbance in any natural process sets off a chain reaction. • Everything must go somewhere. Nothing can really be thrown away. When an object or substance is released into the environment, it will settle somewhere.

Compare & contrast nonpoint source & point source pollutants, & list 3 examples of each. • nonpoint source (NPS) pollutants = pollutants that are carried far from their sources by rain and melting snow and are eventually deposited in soil or into freshwater and groundwater systems • fertilizers & pesticides from farms & residential areas • oil, grease, & toxic chemicals from residential areas & factories • sediment from barren landscapes, construction sites, farms, & forests • etc.

Compare & contrast nonpoint source & point source pollutants, & list 3 examples of each. • point source (PS) pollutants = contaminants that are discharged or emitted from an identifiable source • output from factory pipes • leaking landfills • wastes from food processing plants & slaughterhouses • etc.

  5. 3. How are partners in the Chesapeake Bay Program working to restore the watershed? • Limiting development & monitoring the effects of growth • Restoring habitat • Restoring & protecting water quality

  7. 5. List some of the natural events that affect environmental & human health. • El Niño • volcanic eruptions • floods • hurricanes • wildfires • biologic infestations • etc.
