  1. Student Initiated Project- Water Tunnel Andrew Nauss

  2. Water Tunnel at RIT Problem Statement: Build a water tunnel for use within the Kate Gleason College of Engineering

  3. Test Specimen

  4. Constraints • Must be transportable to classrooms on a cart • Must run on electricity from wall • Must have free surface on top of water tunnel

  5. Benchmark Chart • Technology- Open channel, closed channel, pump, etc. • Speed Range • Test Section Size (in) • Full weight (lb) • Overall size (l,w,h) • Pump power (hp) • Cost

  10. House of Quality

  11. Project Staffing • ME1: • Fluid analysis test section, inputs, outputs • Design any flow straightener • Select pump system • ME2: • Design test specimen mount • Design/analyze 4 test specimens • Assist with structure • ME3: • Design structure of tunnel and supports • Design drainage system • Design structure for transporting • EE1: • Work with ME1 designing electronic controls for pump • Power supply • Controls input and output on display

  12. Customer Feedback (me) • If it can show streamlines over different shapes, project successful • House of quality shows all tests useful/necessary and customer needs captured • All metrics are attainable if given appropriate budget http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/75/Examples_of_Airfoils.svg

  13. Possible Future Projects/Uses • Demos in class • Lab experiments • Develop new test specimens • Add pressure taps and force sensors on test specimens • Mount camera and use computer for pathline tracking http://www.interactiveflows.com/images/flow.gif
