Who were they? • White, middle class, and college educated • Many were women • Belief in the nation’s founding ideals • Democracy, Opportunity, Liberty, Equality, etc…

Reject Social Darwinism Social Darwinists Progressives • Americans are harmed when monopolies controlled the economy and the government was laissez faire (hands off) with big business. • Believed that the fittest people and businesses would succeed and be the most successful and others would fall behind.
Solutions • Progressives want the governmentto solve society’s problems. • Balance needs and interests of business owners and workers. • Aid should go to needy people who were willing to help themselves. • Use political action to achieve reform.
