Background • The University is responding to the financial crisis and cuts in public funding due to the recession • Court asked the SMG to present outline plans for meeting cost reduction in September 2010 • SMG presented initial plans to Court in February 2011 • Plans developed to address a predicted £35m gap (reducing cost by £20m; growing income by £15m) • Strategic • Balanced • Phased • Modern Languages and Cultures - proposal to restructure to improve research and postgraduate activity with lower costs
Proposal is NOT • To shut the School of Modern Languages and Cultures The University WANTS • A strong SMLC that contributes to the University’s strategic ambition
Strategic context: Glasgow 2020: a global vision • Agreed by Senate and Court in 2010 • Vision • to enhance our position as one of the world’s great broad based research intensive universities • Mission • To undertake world leading research and to provide an intellectually stimulating environment thus delivering benefits to culture, society and the economy. • Objectives • Deliver excellent research • Deliver an excellent student experience • Enhance our global reach and reputation
Strategic Context • The College of Arts has some of the best research areas in the university, but also some of the poorest including SMLC • Research income lower and postgraduate activity less than our peers • SMLC has very strong demand from well qualified students in some ‘core’ languages and cultures • Lower demand in other languages • University teaches more languages outside than inside SMLC (Adult Education, Language Centre, Centre for East European Studies) • Are we teaching the right languages, at the right level, in the right way, in the right places
Court consideration of SMG proposals • Court asked that in areas where re-shaping or withdrawal proposed, there be further consultation • Panels to be constituted with Lay membership of the panels • Transparent and open process • Membership, remits and timelines of panel available online http://www.gla.ac.uk/students/academicshape/
Consultation process • Summaries of the key points arising from meetings and correspondence will be made available online • The Panel’s draft report will be shared with the School before it is submitted • The School can submit a commentary to accompany the Panel’s report • Senate will discuss the report (and commentary) at its meeting on 28 April • Court will consider the report (and commentary) at its meeting on 11 May
