  1. Enhancing children’s understanding of mathematical calculation through the use of film. Simon Garnett, Year 5/6 teacher, Sherborne Abbey Primary School

  2. Aim of the project The aspiration of this action research was raise standards in mathematical calculation among of a group of children who were Level 3 in maths, through the use of film. The children used Digi Blue cameras to make short films about what they had learned during lessons.

  3. Objectives for the films The objectives for the films were taken from the assessment guidelines Assessing Pupils’ Progress in Mathematics: Ma2 Number at Levels 3 and 4, and were fitted around weekly teaching plans for the subject.

  4. Objectives of the films The films, which were filmed over a period of seven weeks, centred on enhancing understanding in these three areas: • Using place value to multiply and divide whole numbers by 10 and 100; • Recognising and describing number patterns; and • Using efficient methods of addition.

  5. Action Plan for ICT Group - Simon Garnett, Abbey Primary, Sherborne FOCUS GROUP: Year 5 and 6 borderline level 3/4 in mathematics.

  6. Film 1Objective: Use Place Value to multiply and divide whole numbers by 10 and 100

  7. Film 2Objective: Recognising and describing number patterns

  8. The impact that making the films had on the children’s understanding of mathematical calculation • It raised standards in that it improved the way in which they were able to explain mathematical ideas; • It boosted their confidence in tackling more complex aspects of mathematical calculation; • It gave them a sense of pride in being able to make a film by themselves with minimal teacher/teaching assistant input; and • It made maths seem more fun and interesting.

  9. Film-making in maths- where next? • Help lower ability children access the subject more easily and in a “fun” way; • Accelerate the understanding of high ability children through explaining simply complex mathematical procedures, for example - use trial and improvement methods and ICT tools when solving equations such as x3 + x = 20 (Ma2 Number: Level 6, APP for maths) • Use in plenaries to discuss the lesson’s learning and how the film has explained it; • Whole lesson teaching – what is happening here/can you explain how you could use this method somewhere else?
