Power left in hands of individual villages Trade and farming flourished Advances in learning, architecture, art, and literature Empire reached its height as Rome was falling in the West Maurya • 321-185 BC • Rulers: Chandragupta, Asoka • Maintained order through a well-organized bureaucracy • Rule was effective, but harsh • Golden Age in classical India • Asoka converted to Buddhism • Sent missionaries to spread Buddhism throughout Asia • Rule brought peace and prosperity

  7. Indian Caste System What kind of impact could a caste system have on a society? Good? Bad? • Began as a way establish relationships between Aryan invaders and indigenous people, whom they felt were inferior

  8. Class Activity Place the students in 4 groups (castes) and have them discuss together the advantages and disadvantages of the caste they belong to. Is there any way to change it?

  9. Change Religions!! Some people ….. They were no longer stuck in the caste system! Goodbye Hinduism, hello Buddhism! Converted to.. Buddhism

  10. Now let’s review.. 1. The Maurya and Gupta Empires were the two most powerful empires in Classical India. 2. These empires made advancements in math and science that we still use today. 3. The Hindu Caste System made many people convert to Buddhism.
