Hizkiyahu • Hizkiyahu was born in 739 BC and died in 687 BC at the age of 54 because of natural causes. • He was the son of Achaz and Abi. • Hizkiyahu’s wife was Hephzi-Bah and with her had a son named Menasheh. • He was the king of Judah. • He began to reign when he was twenty five years old and he reigned for twenty nine years in Samaria. • No other king was greater than Hizkiyahu was.

  3. King of Ashur/Assyria • His name was Sancheriv. • He was born in 704 BC and died in 681 BC. • He was killed by his son during a rebellion • He attacked Yehuda (Hizkiyahu) in 556 BC and that’s what caused the trade.

  4. The Kelim • Kelim were holy vessels from the BeitHamikdash. These vessels were used for different activities in the BeitHamikdash. • Hizkiyahu and many other kings used the Kelim from the BeitHamikdash to bribe other foreign kings to get out of danger.

  5. The golden doors of the BeitHamikdash • This is the first situation that someone has gone so far as to take the doors off of the BeitHamikdash to trade for peace.

  6. The Trade • King of Ashur took 46 cities of Judah. • Hizkiyahu rebelled against the king of Ashur and refused to serve him. • After three years of Hizkiyahu’s reign the King of Ashur took over Samaria. • After the fourteenth year of his reign the Assyrian king took over all of the cities of Judah. • Hizkiyahu sent a messenger to the Assyrian king telling him that he wants peace, so they decided to make a trade. • The king of Ashur gave Hizkiyahu three hundred silver coins and thirty gold coins. • Hizkiyahu gave the Assyrian king silver vessels, treasures, and in order for the king of Ashur to come up to Jerusalem Hizkiyahu even chopped off the gold coated doors from the BeitHamikdash.

  7. Did Hizkiyahu’s trade for peace work? • NO! • The king of Ashur took the treasures and went to Jerusalem. • Although the king took the treasures there was still no peace.

  8. Was this Okay? • A lot of sages were not okay with Hizkiyahu trading part of the temple. • But, it does not say anywhere in the torah that you can not use the Kelim when you are in an emergency.
