This website by Dr. Ehud Reiter from the University of Aberdeen aims to help individuals understand and interpret technical data in various fields such as medical, finance, legal, and education. By providing examples like scuba dive data, the site demonstrates the importance of summarizing and analyzing complex data for easier comprehension by the general public. Challenges in data analysis, linguistic communication, user reading age, affect, and more are addressed to make technical information accessible to all. Visit the website for valuable insights on simplifying data for the layman.

Explaining Data to People Ehud Reiter (Univ of Aberdeen) http://www.csd.abdn.ac.uk/~ereiter
The Problem • A person’s memories is likely to include technical data • Medical, finance, legal, educational, … • How can we explain these to “the man in the street” • Not very useful otherwise…
Example: Scuba Dive • Many divers wear sensors which record depth at time points • Surely part of divers Memory • But kilobytes of numbers not very useful • Want summaries • “your deepest dive ever” • Want analyses • “this dive was dangerous, you ascended too quickly”
Challenges • Data analysis • What is interesting, relevant? • Linguistic (graphical) communication • What is user has reading age of 8? • Affect • Bad news (“don’t dive again today”) • Many more!
