  2. A.D. 1513 The Age of Exploration Ponce de Leon from Spain discovers Florida. The name Florida means full of flowers.

  3. A.D. 1521 The Age of Exploration Ponce de Leon lands on the WEST COAST of Florida.

  4. A.D. 1528 The Age of Exploration Panfilo de Navarez from Spain explores TAMPA BAY.

  5. A.D. 1528 The Age of Exploration Navarez is searching for gold.

  6. A.D. 1528 The Age of Exploration Navarez has 5 ships.

  7. A.D. 1528 The Age of Exploration Navarez has 600 soldiers, 60 horses, and packs of dogs.

  8. A.D. 1528 The Age of Exploration Navarez has his soldiers ransack the Native American village.The Indians then sent them north to find gold.

  9. A.D. 1528 The Age of Exploration Navarez never returned to Spain. They ended up eating their horses and building boats from trees. Only 4 survived.

  10. About A.D. 1530 The Age of Exploration Juan Ortiz, age 18, is sent from Spain to find Navarez.

  11. About A.D. 1530 The Age of Exploration Ortiz goes with another and finds the Native American village Navarez had visited.The friend is killed,butOrtizis spared because of the chief’s daughter, Ulele. He becomes a slave.

  12. About A.D. 1530 The Age of Exploration Ortiz angers the chief. Again Ulele saves him, taking him to the village of Macoso.

  13. About A.D. 1530 The Age of Exploration Ortiz and Macoso become friends. Ortiz learns to speak and live as a Native American.

  14. A.D. 1539 The Age of Exploration Hernando de Sotoarrives from Spain with the largest fleet ever.

  15. A.D. 1539 The Age of Exploration Hernando de Sotolands near what is now Safety Harbor, then moves north to search for gold.

  16. A.D. 1540 The Age of Exploration Hernando de Soto uses Ortiz as a guide.Ortiz helps the Spanish and Native Americans become friends.

  17. A.D. 1541 The Age of Exploration Hernando de Soto went as far as the Mississippi River. He died and was buried in the river.

  18. 1600-1757 The Age of Exploration During these years Pinellas was uninhabited. The Native Americans had died in wars with the Spanish and from diseases such as smallpox and measles.

  19. A.D. 1757 The Age of Exploration Don Francisco Maria Celi was sent by Spain to map the west coast of Florida.

  20. A.D. 1757 The Age of Exploration Don Francisco Maria Celi labeled it Punta de Pinal which means “Point of Pines.”
