  4. TIME PERIOD: 9/11/01-Present LOCATION: Global- Focus in the Middle East – Afghanistan (how do you find the enemy in these mountains!?!)

  5. CAUSES: Al-Qaeda (Osama bin Ladin’s group) attacked the US on 9/11/2001 Operation Enduring Freedom began after 9/11/2001 attack(use of aggressive force to deal with foreign countries)

  6. Causes: Capture Al Qaeda operatives and free Afghanistan of the Taliban (Islamic militant group who controls the region and GOVERNMENT) and create a democratic state

Taliban • Rose to power during conflict between Russia and Afghanistan • Began as the mujahideen, a rebel group who wanted the Russians out • USA supported this rebel group who was protecting the Afghanistan people and way of life • After years of fighting, Russia leaves, and groups of mujahideen fight for control of the country/government • They follow very, very strict Muslim laws • They are a religious fundamentalist group who now controls the government in Afghanistan (named the Islamic Unity of Afghanistsan Mujahideen) • Some believe that they supported Al-Qaeda • Today some changes under the Taliban have occurred in Afghanistan • LET’S SEE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE

Outcome… • USA and ally troops are dying or are injured everyday • Innocent Afghans are being killed or injured daily too…people are hating America because of it • *Hope to stop terrorists from planning attacks in the future • **There is a time table for the pullout of US troops and to end this war by the end of 2014
