  1. LRIS-R detector upgrade: 26 Jan 2005 • Documentation: http://lris-upgrade.ucolick.org/ • Proposal summary • Kibrick software/controller architecture • Cowley Schedule/budget • Memo on focus issues in thick CCDs • Some progress on LBNL CCDs (see Stover report) but this remains the #1 risk • Miller/Bolte/Stover trip to LBNL clarified the status of the Keck-LBNL “deal” • LBNL has provided 12 devices (three still on unprocessed wafers) plus some additional devices useful for engineering tests with the processing of the last three wafers we will call the original agreement fullfilled. • In addition, there are nine “DALSA” wafers with two 2k x 4k devices each which they would process and make available with a new arrangement. • LBNL folks are very interested in getting good devices for LRIS-R • Based on a burst of optimism after the LBNL visit we started looking seriously at the components of a proposal for the LRIS upgrade and roughed out a budget and schedule.

  2. Proposal Components • Controller: UCon, in use in Lick guiders, being upgraded, cleaned up and adapted for multi-amp system (free to LRIS-R) in Lick APF and 3m KAST spectrometer upgrade. • Dewar: Lick built, Cryotiger cooled (closed cycle) • Software: upgrade CCD readout and display software for blue and red side and upgrade exposure control interface. DS9 replaces Figdisp; Dashboard (ESI, HIRES, DEIMOS) replaces Xpose. LRIS motor control and XLRIS instrument configuration control will be unchanged. • New shutter, flat dewar window, re-insert camera field flattener (element H).

  3. Budget • Did a bottom-up estimate, compared to recently completed HIRES upgrade for major components as a sanity check. • Assumes new level of cleanliness for dewar work • Assumes post-Adkins level of requirements/standards as adopted for cassegrain ADC project • Has some accommodation for: • Lack of as-built documentation for LRIS • e.g. Consulting costs at Caltech • e.g. Mockup dewar for test fit • Uncertainty in UCon application/testing • Assumes three reviews, PDR, DDR, Pre-ship • Assumes $0 for detector procurement • Assumes new field flattener + flat dewar window • $1.32M + 20% contingency = $1.58M

  4. Schedule • Availability of detectors remains a concern and we hesitate to do much more till that situation is clarified. But, • With 14 March 2005 start • November 2005 PDR • July 2006 DDR • May 2007 Preship Review • June 2007 First Light • Note, this includes a 20% schedule contingency fitted in at the reviews. Totals 5 months • Next: • TSIP? • Requirements iteration with S. Adkins • Acceptance criteria document • Explore alternatives to LBNL devices
