Definition of Terms • Offender- A transgressor or a person who breaks the law • Inmate-A resident of a dwelling that houses occupants of confinement to a prison or hospital • Probation - court ordered community supervision • Prison- confinement in a State or Federal correctional facility to serve a sentence of more than 1 year • Jail- confinement in a local jail while pending trial, awaiting sentencing (less than a year), or awaiting transfer to other facilities after conviction • Parole- community supervision after a period of incarceration

  9. Self Determination Theory (SDT) Autonomy • Autonomy-supportive contexts provide choice and opportunity for self-direction and a • Minimal amount of pressured evaluations, imposed goals, and demands. • Increased amount of positive feedback • (Levesque, Zuehlke, Stanek, & Ryan, 2004)

  10. Self determination Theory continued….. Competence • Sense of effectiveness with interactions within an environment (Guay, Senecal, Gautheir, &Fernet, 2003) • Therapists enhance the sense of competence through providing feedback • Structure activities that bring coherence and direction to the work of therapy (Ryan & Deci, 2008)

  11. Self determination Theory continued….. Relatedness • Sense of being cared for and connected with others • Clients need to feel like the therapist understands there world • Client needs to experience satisfaction in participation with the social world (Ryan & Deci, 2008)

  12. SDT continued…. • Self determination theory looks at an individuals’ immediate social contexts • Then to their developmental environments • Examining to what degree needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness are being or have been thwarted (Ryan & Deci, 2000)
