Thomas Jefferson was our 3rd President. Defeated John Adams in the election of 1800. Beginnings of a “party system” in American politics. The jeffersonian era

Jefferson was the first President to have his office in Washington DC. Early on, Washington DC was a very primitive looking town. New capital

The War of 1812 was between the Americans and the British. Americans were growing frustrated by British impressment of American ships in the Atlantic Ocean. James madison and the war of 1812
British ships were “impressing” American ships, seizing them and drafting them into the British Navy. impressment
Also, the British were supplying Native Americans with guns in support of their ongoing battle with Americans. British aiding native americans
“War Hawks” demanded the US go to war with Great Britain. By spring of 1812, the US was again at war with Britain. War hawks
America was not ready for war (not much popular support, even less money). Fortunately, Britain was too preoccupied with Napoleon to focus all of its efforts on America. War of 1812
In spite of this preoccupation, Britain gained several early victories over the Americans, including the seizure of Washington DC in August of 1814. President Madison and his cabinet (advisors) fled Washington as the British burned down the capital. War of 1812

1. Ended the Federalist Party (they had been opposed to the war). 2. Encouraged growth of American manufacturing (Americans no longer wanted to rely on British to produce goods). 3. Solidified America’s status as a free and independent nation. Consequences of the war

A belief that national interests should be placed ahead of regional concerns. What’s best for the country is most important, American territory continues to increase. Nationalism
