Part 1 - Occupational Health & Safety • Online Induction - COMPULSORY FOR ALL NEW STAFF • http://www.adm.monash.edu.au/ohse/training/safety-induction.html • The online induction has been split into the following components: • A general induction (including various special hazards modules) - 30 minutes; and • Campus specific modules (2-3 minutes each) • The primary aim of the online induction is to provide new staff with a brief overview of occupational health and safety policies, procedures and practices at Monash and to provide them with a basic understanding of their own occupational health and safety responsibilities. New staff should complete the Monash Safety Induction Program within the first few days of their arrival. • NOTE: Unless both modules are completed in their entirety, a record of the person's induction will not be successfully recorded.

  4. As the class supervisor you need to make sure your students are aware of their responsibility to OHS

Identify components of the class which could harm the health and safety of students or staff involved The Unit Coordinator will be responsible for reviewing the laboratory/workshop content, determining if there are components of the class which could harm the health and safety of students or staff involved in the class, and, if necessary, have completed the relevant RISK ASSESSMENT. If a risk assessment has been completed for a class it must be made available to you to review prior to the class. SEEK FURTHER ADVICE ON RISK CONTROL FROM THE UNIT COORDINATOR

Occupational Health & Safety • Be Prepared • Should an emergency situation arise during your class (eg student looses consciousness) you should already have an idea of : • Where the nearest phone is located • Where the nearest first-aid kit is • Who are the local first-aiders • Who should you ring in case of an emergency • In an evacuation which direction should I direct the students to leave by. Once we have left the building where is the local assembly point.

  7. All CAMPUS buildings have Emergency Evacuation Plans, similar to the one below, located near EXIT points on each floor. When you know the location of your class take the time to familiarise yourself with the local Emergency Evacuation Plan.

  8. Occupational Health & Safety All university buildings are equipped with an emergency warning and intercommunication system. Full details on the process of evacuation is available in the OHS “Procedures for the health and safety of students undertaking studies in laboratories, studios, workshops or clinical activities”. What about you? • One of the most intensive activities you will undertake during your time as Tutor will be that of marking assignments. • With 30 + assignments, and a relatively short turn-around period in which to mark them, you may well experience some tiredness and body sprains and strains if you do not manage the task appropriately. • SOME TIPS! • Plan ahead – do not leave marking to the last minute and try to cram it into a single day. • Do your marking in a well lit, well ventilated environment • Ensure you maintain good body posture while marking – no sustained awkward postures! • Take frequent breaks, to stretch or to grab a glass of water.
