  1. e-Tutoring: an e-Learning Essential for Academic Success Strategies Liticia J. Salter Texas A&M University at Qatar Victoria P. Krawczynski New Mexico State University

  2. “…academic success and student retention soon became focal points of the mission.”

  3. “…we evaluated several different means of online tutoring.” Pros Cons • Support of IT department • All sessions were recorded • Virtual whiteboard • Four log-ins required • Very “glitchy” and small video • Too many steps to each task Centra Outside Tutoring Services • A one-stop-shop for eTutoring • Expensive • Impersonal

  4. “…our first [e-Tutor] was not only experienced in tutoring, but flexible and open to assisting in our experimentation.”

  5. “…we needed to meet them where they were already.”

  6. “… so we gradually designed a five-point tutoring technique that allowed for customized e-Tutoring, but simultaneously provided structure and protocol…”

  7. Point One – Introductory email You have scheduled an online tutoring session! In order for the eTutor to help you, please follow these steps prior to your session: Step 1: Please check our Facebook page to find more information about what’s going on in The OASIS, and don’t forget to view the video about how to work with an online tutor on the bottom, left-hand side of the page. Step 2: You need to have a Skype account and have Skype downloaded and installed on your computer. Step 3: Make sure you have a functioning microphone and speakers connected to your computer. Optionally, you may also have a video camera if you wish to be on camera during the session. Your eTutor will be on camera, but you are not required to be. *** You can check your microphone and speaker settings on Skype by clicking on “Tools” – “Options” – “Audio Settings”. Step 4: Please have your assignment saved to the computer from which you will be working. In addition, please bring the prompt given to you by your professor so the eTutor can get a good understanding of your assignment. Step 5: When it is time for your online tutoring session, please make sure that you are in a quiet area free of distractions. Also, please turn off your cell phone and shut down all programs on your computer with the exception of Skype and the program in which you have your assignment. Step 6: Please sign on Skype at least 5 minutes before the scheduled start time of your eTutoring session and wait for the eTutor to contact you.

  8. Point Two– Gradual start to session

  9. Point Three– Have an understanding of possible problems Student issues: Distracted, late, in a noisy area, no assignment to review, no prompt, student expectations, time limit with regard to when the assignment is due Technical issues: Internet connectivity, screen-sharing lag, microphone problems, lack of knowledge about technology

  10. Point Four– Strong closing of session

  11. Point Five – Follow-up

  12. In 2009 – 2010 academic year, the OASIS performed : 2151 hours of writing tutoring Onsite: 1129 (6 adult tutors) Online: 647 (2 eTutors) Peer tutors: 375

  13. “…e-Tutoring fostered active, engaged, and consistent language skills development; further, for many students, it was a lifeline.”
