  1. IPEDS OVERVIEW CareerTech August Conference 2010 Presented By: Steve Robison OK Department of Career and Technology Education

  2. What is IPEDS? IPEDS is an acronym for the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. It is a system of interrelated surveys conducted annually by the US Department of Education to collect data from all institutions that participate in the federal student aid programs.

  3. Why do we report this stuff?? Because we don’t have any choice!!

  4. How is this information used? • IPEDS data is used to describe and analyze trends in postsecondary education in the United States. • Users of IPEDS data include congress, federal agencies, state governments, education providers, professional associations, private businesses, media, students, and parents.

  5. Data collected through 9 surveys • Institutional Characteristics • Completions • 12-Month Enrollment • Human Resources • Fall Enrollment • Finance • Student Financial Aid • Graduation Rates • 200% Graduation Rates

  6. 2010-2011 Data Collection Schedule • Fall Collection – Opens September 8 and closes October 20 • Institutional Characteristics • Completions • 12-Month Enrollment • Winter Collection – Opens December 8 and closes January 26 • Human Resources • Spring Collection – Opens December 8 and closes April 13 • Fall Enrollment • Finance • Student Financial Aid • Graduation Rates • 200% Graduation Rates

  7. Frequently Asked Questions….

  8. Do you really expect me to include high school students? I recommend it, and I will tell you why!

  9. Here are my reasons: The instructions for the enrollment survey say to include any high school student enrolled in a postsecondary program. IPEDS will take data from your Finance survey and compare it to data from your Enrollment survey to generate an expense per student ratio. If you do not include HS students, it will appear as though your school is receiving excessive funding compared to your peers. I have talked at length with the IPEDS staff about this issue, and they concluded that reporting for postsecondary is based on the level of the program rather than the level of the student. Since high school students are always reported as “all other” rather than “first-time,” you will not be required to track cohorts of these students over several years. The burden to report this information is limited.

  10. What is a first-time student? A first-time student is any adult student attending a postsecondary institution for the first time. A student should only be reported as a first-time student once. If the status is unknown, it is assumed they are first-time. Report all other adult students and high school students in the “all other students” category.

  11. What constitutes a completer? In the past we only included full program completers (not “occupational” completers). Now we are reporting career major completers. What if a student completes more than one career major in a given year? If a student is enrolled once, can they be reported as a completer multiple times in the same year? If a student is enrolled in more than one career major, should I report the student as being enrolled multiple times?

  12. How do we handle this? From the enrollment side: Report the student as only one enrollment (unless the student is in more than one pathway). From the completion side: Report the student as completing only one time per pathway (report the longest career major completed).

  13. What is new for this year?

  14. Changes in collecting/reporting race and ethnicity. Old Method: 5 Categories • American Indian or Native Alaskan • Black • Hispanic • White • Asian or Pacific Islander New Method: 2 Questions • Are you Hispanic? Y/N • Select one or more: • American Indian or Alaska Native • Asian • Black or African American • Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander • White
