On Campus Employment • Employment Eligibility is determined by the student’s immigration status; F-1 and J-1 students may be eligible for employment if they are maintaining lawful status, in good academic standing, and enrolled full-time (as defined by the Graduate School). • On Campus Employment should not continue beyond the end date of the student’s last registered semester (end date of Graduate Appointment will likely need to be amended). • On campus employment is best defined as employment for which payment is received through NC State Payroll (not Accounting) and is usually physically on the NC State campus (including Centennial Campus and the CVM campus). On Campus Employment (continued) • On-campus employment for all appointments combined is strictly limited to 20 hours / week; may be full-time (more than 20 hours) during breaks and as long as the student is pre-registered for the following semester. • J-1 students must obtain written employment authorization from their J-1 Program Sponsor (OIS for students whose program sponsor is NC State) before beginning any type of employment: http://www.ncsu.edu/ois/forms/student.php • International students on non-immigrant visas other than J-1 and F-1 likely are not eligible for employment. Important Reminders • F-1 and J-1 student employment must be in a temporary position (not in a permanent or open ended position). • F-1 and J-1 student employment is disallowed in the event of a strike or walkout or if it displaces a US worker. • F-1 and J-1 students must stop working if the employment interferes or delays their studies. Change in Curriculum/Level (continued) • OIS defers to the academic department to confirm the students anticipated completion date and the effective start semester for any change. • OIS will issue a new I-20/DS-2019 based on the information provided by the academic department and Graduate School memo. • Changes in curriculum related to thesis/non-thesis options no longer require a new I-20/DS-2019 unless an I-20/DS-2019 extension is required. New Students Fall 09 • A new F-1 or J-1 student is eligible to work on-campus if the student has: • Entered the US • Checked in with his/her department • Checked in with OIS (needed for E-Verify and SSn purposes) • The I-94 card will provide the “Date of Entry” into the US and baseline employment eligibility start date. • Reporting Date is 8-19-2009 for both the I-20 and DS-2019 for incoming Fall 2009 students. New Transfer Students Fall 09 • An F-1 or J-1 student is eligible to work on-campus if OIS has issued the transfer I-20 or DS-2019. • If the SEVIS transfer (release) date has not occurred, the student has no employment eligibility at NC State. • OIS is unable to issue the I-20 or DS-2019 for F-1 and J-1 transfers until the SEVIS release date which may occur after the first day of classes.
