  1. Research Presentation Day 2001 Design Process Re-Engineering through Performance Analysis Mark Haffey Ph.D. Student (Full Time) Supervised by Dr. Alex Duffy

  2. Background Performance Measurement Research Approach Discussion/ Close Why measure Design Development Process Performance? • Management of processes/activities supported. • Communicate. • Control. • Recognise. • Measured representation of processes/activities. • Factual Decision Making. • Trends. • Improve/Optimise Process Performance. • Redesign. • Identify Strengths and Weaknesses

  3. Background Performance Measurement Research Approach Discussion/ Close Weaknesses of Current Solutions • Advocate a balance of weightings and considerations and not reflecting organisational objectives. • Focus on the identification of performers (non-performers irrelevant?). • Lack the identification of change feasibility and sequence issues. • Lack an overall index and sub-indices. • Lack the quantification of relations. • Promote the application of pre-defined goals and intuitive measures. • Propose generic business frameworks (lacking dynamic nature).

  4. Background Performance Measurement Research Approach Discussion/ Close Unresolved issues in Process Performance • Definition of strategic composition and deployment. • Goal orientated composition of metrics not defined. • Metrics applied erratically and intuitively. • Relationships not defined. • Retrospective not Prescriptive. • Specialisation and generalisation of measures (Meaning).

  5. Background Performance Measurement Research Approach Discussion/ Close Research Aim To develop a methodology for Re-Engineering the Design Development Process through performance behaviour modelling

  14. Background Performance Measurement Research Approach Discussion/ Close Summary • Develop a methodology which extracts the supporting infrastructure (Meta-Knowledge) that enables Design Development process performance behaviour to be: • Acquired • Analysed • Categorised • Interpreted • Develop a means to manage and re-design process activities and architectures through an understanding of process performance behaviour. • Provide a powerful means to initiate ‘What if’ process design analyses based on generated knowledge of process performance behaviour.
