  3. Overview • UW is a distributed campus with autonomous departments. • We will discuss central email infrastructure. • <uwnetid>@u.washington.edu • These central services are for faculty, staff, student, clinician, alumni.

  4. Clients • Native (IMAP) – Pine/Alpine, Outlook, Thunderbird, EntourageMacMail, VistaMail, etc, etc, etc • Mobile – Pocket Outlook, etc • Web – Web Pine, Outlook Web • Consider - Offline support • Consider - Address Book Service (LDAP)

  5. UW Mail Relays • Process all email for our central services • Deskmail / Forwarding • Exchange • Virtual Domains • Provides email anti-virus and anti-spam • Average daily volume in 2003 was 612,859 messages • Average daily volume in October 2007 was over 5.1 million messages

  6. Relay Hardware and Software • Edge servers are broken out by service population and provide anti-spam/anti-virus • 9 servers for off-campus mail • 3 servers for on-campus mail • 5 servers for outbound mail • 4 servers for smtp submission services • Dell hardware • Running SophosPureMessage and sendmail on Red Hat Linux

  7. Message Processing • Discard virus-laden messages and certain attachments • Check messages against DNSBLs and reject certain matches • Analyze message for spam content and discard or reject based on results • Requires constant care

UW Deskmail (Inbox) Service • UW IMAPD • MIX folder format • Email Delivery Manager (EDM) for filtering and forwarding • Some Mobile Device Support • Fac/Staff/Student – provisioned with Subscriptions/Expirations middleware • 7 day backup retention policy • Fac/Staff: 1GB quota, Students: 300 MB

  11. UW Exchange Service • Microsoft Exchange 2007 • Collaboration/Calendar key drivers • Broad Blackberry/Mobile Device Support • 2GB quota, more available but not recommended • Currently ~600 users, planning to scale to >10,000 • Fac/Staff only • For fee/cost recovery

  12. Mailman (Email Lists) • Open Source – locally modified • Public and Restricted lists • User managed lists • Automatically provisioned lists (classes)
