  3. Why? • You do not have the fundamental mathematics skills needed to apply economics to education. • You are therefore only getting a limited introduction to education. • Instead, we are going to have 2 different classes…

  4. Wednesday mornings: survey of education in the united statesThursday afternoons: quantitative reasoning

  5. Why? • This is the best of both worlds. • You will develop a rich understanding of education, and you will also develop the mathematical skills that you will need for life.

Themes for survey of us education • Education as a way to provide students with the skills they need for the labor market • Education as a way to make students into thoughtful democratic citizens • Education in the US context as a shared cultural experience for all young people Today, we will look at 3 pieces of media that will introduce us to these concepts.

  7. Themes for quantitative reasoning • Think of this as critical thinking with numbers. • We will review some basic concepts in algebra, geometry and statistics. • But we will spend most of our time solving word problems. • We will also apply math to the everyday needs of a hypothetical Moroccan English teacher.
