  1. Science Curriculum Review Team April 26, 2011

  2. Agenda • Briefly review remaining science data. • Tony Rainsberger will provide commentary and examples of science ACT items. • Review recommendations submitted by team members and identify recommendations for Board.

  3. Group’s Purpose & Composition • Purpose: To utilize the review process to strengthen Oakwood’s K-12 science programming. • Provide input • Propose ideas • Serve as watchdog/accountability check • Involve stakeholders • Composition: K-12 science teachers, administrators, content experts, and parents and community members.

  4. Group’s Scope of Work • Review the K-12 science audit report commissioned by Oakwood and conducted by an outside Audit Panel of content experts (university professors). The audit evaluated Oakwood's current K-12 science program and identified strengths and suggestions for growth. • Review Oakwood's science data (ITBS, OAA, OGT, AP, ACT, etc.). • Consider recommendations for changes from internal and external stakeholders. • Make recommendations for changes to the Board of Education.

  5. Science Data • Part II(B) (today) • Iowa Test of Basic Skills • Advanced Placement exams • College Connection Data • Disaggregated data (gender, race/ethnicity)

  6. Advanced Placement Data

  7. AP Data (2009)

  8. AP Data: Biology

  9. AP Data: Chemistry

  10. AP Data: Physics

  11. Iowa Test of Basic Skills Data Fall, 2010

  12. Iowa Test of Basic Skills Data

  13. College Connection Data* * Data from 2005-2007 (2005: Miami; 2006: OSU; 2007: UD)

  14. College Connection Data* * Data from 2008-2010 (2008: OU; 2009: WSU; 2010: Denison)

  15. College Connection Data* • Qualitative data regarding science preparation: • Astro easy with physics background (D) • Good teachers (D) • AP bio helped a lot (D) • The science department teachers approached students exactly the same as the college professors do. (W) • Bio training under tough--but--fair Teacher’s Name left me ready for the biology trilogy. (W) • Everything we learned in my…science classes I have learned about from my time at Oakwood. (W) • I had trouble in this when I was there, classes run with the most advanced rather than slower. (O) • Awesome, our program at Oakwood was very helpful. • I’m not good at science, but I did okay in nutrition because I studied a lot. • I took Chem 121. I got an “A” in the course. Chem made more sense the 2nd time I took it. * Data from 2008-2010 (2008: OU; 2009: WSU; 2010: Denison)

  20. Evaluating & Prioritizing Recommendations • Group: We will briefly review all recommendations submitted to our team from team members. • Individually: For each recommendation, evaluate and mark it with a dot sticker according to the following system: • I support this recommendation. It should be a high priority. • I support this recommendation. It should be a medium/low priority. • I do not support this recommendation. You may also write comments/questions on the recommendations. Put a * by these.

  21. Evaluating & Prioritizing Recommendations • Kim will: • Compile all feedback on the recommendations and draft a document that incorporates the recommendations that received strong support. • Send a copy of the document to all Science Curriculum Review Team members. • Team members will have the opportunity via email to provide feedback on this document. • The final version of the document will be shared with the Oakwood Board of Education at its June meeting.

  22. Next Steps • May, 2011 • Finalize recommendations to the Board. • June, 2011 • Present recommendations to the Board. Would anyone like to participate in this meeting (6/20/11 at 7:30 PM)? • Identify timeline for working groups (teacher/admin members of the Science Curriculum Review Team). Teachers, please provide feedback on the draft timeline/working group process when it is emailed to you.

  23. Questions?Thank you for being part of this fast-paced and important process!
