Goal 1 Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger Millennium Development Goals
Purpose • To reduce the level of poverty within developing countries through the development of strategies to promote employment opportunities (particularly for women and young people) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QigX7t3Ym-I
Reasons why it is important • Impact on morbidity and mortality. • Individual • Impacts on ability to buy food, health care, basic needs • National Level • Country doesn’t have economic resources to develop infrastructure, invest in education, health, political system, public institutions – failure to invest in these areas mean people are unable to improve their lives and escape the cycle of poverty
Reasons why it is important • If people live on more than US$1 per day: • Purchase nutritious foods – therefore reducing hunger • Improving nutrition means improving health status people can have greater opportunities to achieve their full potential and lead productive, creative lives in accordance with their needs and interests.
Target • Halve the proportion of people whose income is less than US$1 per day • Achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all – including women and young people • Halve the proportion of people who suffer from hunger

Goal 2 Achieve universal primary education Millennium Development Goals
Purpose • Provide both boys and girls in developing countries with access to primary schooling to improve literacy and numeracy skills.

Reasons why it is important • Education leads to… • Greater employment opportunities • Increase in income • Better access to nutrition, shelter, health care • Being able to understand health-related information • Those who are educated are more likely to ensure their children are educated • Higher literacy rates correspond with economic growth!

Important to note • Girls tend to drop out before boys from poorer households • Aid directed towards basic education has increased, but not near the estimated amount • This only includes primary, not secondary education

Goal 3 Promote gender equality and empower women Millennium Development Goals
Purpose • Promote gender equality and empower women • Raise the SES of women in developing countries through ensuring females have access to education
Reason why its important • Females are generally less likely than males to have access to education. • Why?
Reason why its important • Females are generally less likely than males to have access to education • Why? • Factors such as – drought, food shortages, poverty, war, HIV/AIDS contribute to low school enrolment • lack of access to water - means that females are forced to spend significant proportions of their day fetching water • Sanitation also impacts school attendance – families are less likely to send their female children to school if separate and private toileting facilities are not provided for girls. • Income – families with limited income – male children are provided education opportunities before their female siblings
Reason why its important • Females are generally less likely than males to have access to education. • Education – • enables access to higher paid jobs • less likely to impact negatively on their health • Women are traditionally the primary caregivers of families, therefore it is important for them to develop their knowledge regarding health-related behaviours, including reading and understanding health information
Target • Target 1 – eliminate gender disparity in all levels of education • ACTIVITY • Read p. 316 and state why this is a target
Progress towards the goal • The enrolment of girls in primary education increased more than the rate of boys in ALL developing regions between 2000-2006 • Developing regions are progressing towards achieving gender parity in education enrolment. • The number of women in parliament is continually increasing slowly • Still more to do… • we need to achieve gender parity in primary and secondary education in many developing countries • Poverty puts girls at a disadvantage for education • Women tend to be paid less than men and have less secure employment than men • Although women in parliament has increased it is far short of the MDG
Activity • Answer the following questions • How might the status of women differ in developed countries compared to developing countries? How could this affect health and human development • Discuss why a focus on women can greatly improve the health status and development experienced in a country?

Goal 4 Reduce Child Mortality Millennium Development Goals
Purpose • Reduce the number of deaths of children under the age of 5 (U5MR)
Reasons why it is important • Children in developing countries have a higher risk of dying within the first 5 years of life than children in developed countries • many deaths are can be prevented or vaccinated against – malnutrition, malaria, diarrhoea, measles and pneumonia, maternal/neonatal care.
Target • Target 1 – reduce by 2/3 the U5MR • Why - Children who pass their 5th birthday have a greater chance of surviving during their adulthood when compared with children under 5
