Introduction; • - Ethics and values should be considered when revising ordesigning a new course for CLIMASP. • The first step in this regard is to articulate clearly the ethical implications and moral basis of possible responses to global climate change. • Climate change confronts us with a different set of challenges with regard to ethics. • There are a wide range of ethical issues related to the effects of climate change and that each requires a specific response.
A duty appears to rest on individual, corporate, national and international agents to ensure that they do not (further) contribute to causing climate change, but rather contribute towards reversing it. Climate change cannot be dealt with adequately and properly if the ethical dimensions are not highlighted, well understood, and taken into account in decisions about responses.
Objectives The program on the Ethical Dimensions of Climate Change seeks to: Facilitate express examination of ethical dimensions of climate change. Create better understanding about the ethical dimensions of climate change among policy makers and the general public. Assure that people around the world, including those most vulnerable to climate change, participate in any ethical inquiry about responses to climate change. Develop an interdisciplinary approach to inquiry about the ethical dimensions of climate change.
The connection with education *The ethical dimension of climate change is not only related to its assessing and mitigating its effects, but also to the manner in which we respond and adapt to these challenges. One of the most important issues in this regard is to include this ethical dimension in our courses and activities. *The teaching in a range of courses with environmental relevance (including engineering and economics in particular) would undoubtedly be enhanced by the inclusion of ethics modules, which would in turn enhance capacities to deal with climate change at the required comprehensive and cross-cutting level. *key ethical considerations should be built into education about environmental issues, including climate change, at all levels.
The role in clarifying ethics related to climate change; When revising or designing a new course for CLIMASP the focus should be to enhance students ability to take responsibility for coping with climate change issues by Informing students and making them aware of climate change issues and building their capacity for ethical reflection on these issues. Priority areas for this action include: Undertaking a review of existing educational policies and curricula, in order to initiate the development of guidelines to facilitate the inclusion of climate change related ethical issues into educational programs.
Undertaking a comprehensive review of existing tools, materials and practices in teaching and learning climate change. Addressing standard setting in including ethical issues related climate change in higher education. Developing ways for supporting a ‘community of practice’ around climate change ethics in education. Reinforcing links between science, environment, and other important areas such as economy, culture, ethics and justice, gender equity, and peace.
