Imperialism – The domination of one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region. Countries (mostly European) competed for pieces of the world. National Prestige - A way of showing the superiority of one’s country…. Imperialism. “My country is the Best!”.

  1. Imperialism – The domination of one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region.

Views on Imperialism I believe that we are the first race in the world and that the more of the world we inhabit the better it is for the human race… I believe it to be my duty to God, my Queen, and my country to paint the whole map of Africa red, red from the Cape to Cairo. Why Imperialism? • Economic Benefits • New markets to sell things, resources • Political Benefits/Military Benefits • Places to refuel, competition, strategic locations • Religious/humanitarian • Feeling of superiority • Racism • Paternalism - practice of treating or governing people in a fatherly manner, especially by providing for their needs without giving them rights or responsibilities

Imperialism Vocab. • Direct Rule: sending officials or soldiers to administer or rule a colony • Indirect Rule:using sultans/chiefs/local rulers to govern, but tried to “Westernize” the ruling class • Protectorate: country with its own government but under the control of another country • Sphere of Influence: area in which an outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges • Extraterritoriality: right of foreigners to be protected by the laws of their own nations

  8. Effects of Opium Wars • Opens China to the World • Puts China under control of Western Countries • Causes more poverty in China • Seen as a disgrace for China • Causes people to rethink China’s Social and Political System • Weakens China’s Rule • Creates anti-western feelings

  9. Sphere of Influence - an area over which a country has significant cultural, economic, military or political influence. Often times, this is an area where a stronger country will intervene when considered necessary.
