  1. Using Language to Persuade…An Introduction Learning Intentions: To understand what persuasive language is, where it is found and why we use it. Success Criteria: Complete the tasks, showing an understanding of: Audience, contention, purpose and language.

  2. With your partner, discuss where would you find persuasive language? (language that is trying to persuade us to do something!) • Why do we need to know about persuasive language? Who cares??

  3. When a writer or speaker is trying to persuade us to accept their point of view, they must consider 4 important elements. • Audience: Who they are addressing e.g. a wide audience, a specific group of people, people affected by an issue etc. • Contention: Their overall argument- or point of view that they want us to accept. • Purpose: Why they are trying to persuade us e.g. to make us agree with something, to make us take action or to think more carefully about something etc. • Language: How they try to persuade us- the words or images they use to try and influence us e.g. humour, anger, striking images, catchy slogans etc.

  5. Text 4 Drug tests send wrong message The school drug testing programme is absurd. The time, effort and resources should be put into drug education and counselling. Chasing after students to invade their privacy only teaches them that they have no civil rights. Students who refuse these tests are less likely to be drug-users but are more likely to be students who understand something about freedom. Some casual drug use is going to happen among students. They need to know the risks and have help available to them. Drug testing is only teaching students the risk is being caught. The chief executive started this absurd campaign and it is time he stopped it. It is yet another example of his disdain for human rights in Hong Kong. To recap: • It is important that we understand HOW and WHY language is used to persuade so that: • We don’t buy everything we see on television! • We learn how to be critical of the things we see and read. • We can become better at getting across our own points of view. • We can win an argument with our parents/friends/teachers!
