Day One: Monday, May 12, 2014 • Quiet Question: Type Two Prompt---Using your notes from the East Asian Philosophies/Religions Lesson Plan, you and your partner need to complete the following task. • Identify the overall goal for each philosophy and how that philosophy believes you achieve that goal. • Then of the four philosophies, explain which one you agree with or identify most with and why?

Day One: Monday, May 12, 2014 • Class: In China from ancient times until the 20th century, the people applied their religious philosophies to their governments through the concept of the Mandate of Heaven. This was established by the Zhou Dynasty in 1045 BC to justify the overthrowing of the previous government. • Follow along as Ms. Barben’s reads aloud and do Active Reading Strategies.

  4. Day One: Monday, May 12, 2014 • Class: Ms. Barben is going to begin her China and Imperialism Powerpoint, and you should take notes in the provided graphic organizer in either PENCIL, BLACK, or BLUE PEN. • Homework: For the reading notes for this lesson, we will be using two different sources. You will be taking reading notes in the graphic organizer in either PINK, PURPLE, RED, or ORANGE Pen. • Two Sources: • Photocopied “China Resists Outside Influence” Supplemental---pages 1-8 • Online Textbook---pages 724-732 and pages 735-737 • Chunking of Reading and Note-Taking Homework: • Night One: Monday, May 12 • Read pages 1-4 of Photocopied Supplemental Reading and take notes. • Night Two: Tuesday, May 13 • Read pages 5-8 of Photocopied Supplemental Reading and take notes. • Night Three: Wednesday , May 14 • Read pages 724-729 of Online Textbook and take notes. • Night Four: Thursday, May 15 • Read pages 730-732 and 735-737 of Online Textbook and take notes.

  5. Day Two: Tuesday, May 13, 2014 • Class: Ms. Barben is going to continue her China and Imperialism Powerpoint, and you should continue to take notes in the provided graphic organizer. • Homework: Continue the chunked reading and note-taking.

  6. Day Three: Wednesday, May 14, 2014 • Class: Ms. Barben is going to continue her China and Imperialism Powerpoint, and you should continue to take notes in the provided graphic organizer. • Homework: Continue the chunked reading and note-taking.

  7. Day Four: Thursday, May 15, 2014 • Class: Ms. Barben is going to finish her China and Imperialism Powerpoint, and you should continue to take notes in the provided graphic organizer. • Homework: Finish the chunked reading and note-taking. This will be checked for class participation points the next class period.

  8. Day Four: Thursday, May 15, 2014 • Individual Project/Summative Assessment for Imperialism in East Asia: This is a Summative Assessment on Imperialism in East Asia. You will be creating a Propaganda Poster on one of the identified historical events/practices from either the viewpoint of the Chinese or the Japanese depending on what event is selected. • This will not be due until after we cover the Japan and Imperialism Lesson Plan and Japanese Militarism of the 20th Century Lesson Plan--- About two weeks from today

Day Four: Thursday, May 15, 2014 • Chunking of Propaganda Poster: • Night One: Wednesday, May 21, 2014 • Select your topic. • If it is a topic that involves both China and Japan, decide which viewpoint you are going to do the propaganda poster from---Chinese or Japanese. • Begin to complete the provided pre-write and write down the information from the two lesson plans. • Night Two: Thursday, May 22, 2014 • Decide which two propaganda strategies you are going to use. • In the provided pre-write, identify, define, and explain how each of the two strategies will be used in the propaganda poster.

Day Four: Thursday, May 15, 2014 • Night Three: Friday, May 23, 2014 • Come up with your propaganda caption. • Select which historical primary source IMAGES you want to use in your propaganda poster. • Begin to create a rough draft of the art part of the propaganda poster. • Night Four: Tuesday, May 27, 2014 • Write your rough draft of the written part on the computer using the information from the pre-write. • Night Five: Wednesday, May 28, 2014 • Edit your art part. • Edit your written part. • Print up to turn in on: Thursday, May 29, 2014

Worth 60 Points • A well-developed paragraph consists of a minimum of six strong sentences. • The sentences should either identify and define, explain and provide examples, or analyze the content/ historical relationships. • Paragraph One: • Explained the core issue and answer the 5 Ws and How and Effects---Use information from class notes and reading notes! • This is a detailed overview of the historical event with historical evidence. • Paragraph Two: • Explained why the student chose the topic for the propaganda poster • Use information from class notes and readings to support your argument/position. • Explained why you chose to do the poster from the chosen viewpoint • Paragraph Three: • Explained the thought process behind the slogan and how it represents the chosen viewpoint on the issue • Explained the choice of images used in the poster and how it supports the chosen viewpoint on the issue • Paragraph Four: • Explained the first propaganda strategy used by defining it, how it was used in the poster, and why it was chosen • Explained the second propaganda strategy used by defining it, how it was used in the poster, and why it was chosen

  17. Summative Assessment • 7.__________The propaganda poster was done neatly, in color, typed, spell-checked, grammar-checked, and edited for capitalization errors. If not, it is 10% off the value. • Total: /120 Points
