  1. Operational Google Earth (GE) Product Suite for Regional Weekly Hazard Outlooks Nicholas S. Novella, Wassila M. Thiaw Climate Prediction Center, National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) FEWS-NET Science Meeting Oct 2-3, 2012 Santa Barbara, CA

  2. Why GE ?? • GE allows a more dynamic, 3D visualization of geospatial data from the global scale to more detailed, local levels. • A new presentation and analysis platform that offers more possibilities in conveying geospatial information than static maps (i.e. multiple overlays, animation). • Can read and display multiple geospatial data types (.kml, GPS, shp, geotiff, raster, etc.) • It’s FREE !!!

  3. GE Project Goals • The first initiative was to convert of a set of common Africa briefing maps into .kml (Key Markup Language) files. • Documentation: https://developers.google.com/kml/documentation/ • After completion, .kml’s were then written which duplicate a large majority CPC FEWS-NET products for Africa, Central America / Hispaniola, and Central Asia. • Currently, 500-600 .kmls available • Expand Admin Boundary database • Next steps: • To acquire additional raw data from FEWS-NET institutes for product improvements and expansion of product suite. • To expand for all domains per CPC’s International Page. • May disseminate daily .kml files similar to RFE/ARC on ftp for quick display.

  4. Current GE Suite Data Structure GE Afghan CA/Hisp Africa • Product Datasets: • RFE • GFS • GTS • IR • NCEP • USGS • AFWA • Product Datasets: • TRMM • GFS • GTS • IR • NCEP • USGS • Product Datasets: • RFE • ARC • GFS • GTS • IR • NCEP • USGS

  5. GE Usage / Recommendations • GE version 6.0+ must be installed on your local machine • For optimal viewing, the following steps are advised: • Turn off default yellow global boundary data, and any other native GE layers • Download white base map and supplemental boundary data, and save .kmz to “My Places” • ftp://ftp.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/fews/ge/readme/basemap.kmz • User can adjust depth of country/administrative boundary lines by right-clicking .kml Properties • For Animations, go to animation options (wrench icon) and change time display to UTC • Depending on your local hardware specifications, a large number of open .kml’s may slow down both navigation and animations. • Also helps to turn off terrain, or reduce terrain quality under GE options. • An inventory of all .kml file labels and their descriptions can be found in the online readme. • ftp://ftp.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/fews/ge/readme/readme.txt • *** Once .kml’s are downloaded to a local directory, there is noneed to re- download for product updates. Just reopen or revert .kml in GE. • *** Links for public .kml download • FTP: ftp://ftp.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/fews/ge/ • Web: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/fews/kml/kml.shtml • (please note: not all .kml’s are available on website)
