  1. Minute to Win It!

  2. RULES • For every question we want new people from each side to come up! (Come up in groups) • You have a set amount of time to answer questions (depends on difficulty) • Once music stops, you are out of time! • If you have the right answer, your group gets the points. Otherwise you don’t • First team to get right answer, gets an extra point • Everyone sitting can help by cheering on group • Winning team and individuals getting involved get a prize 

  3. Terminology! • 1 minute to win it ... 2 people come up (1 pt) Classify the following by their degree and number of terms (type)

  4. Easy peeezy question # 1 • 1 ½ minutes to win it ... 2 people come up (1 pt) Easy: Expand & Simplify Q: 2(3a+4)(a-6) – (3-a)2

  5. 2(3a+4)(a-6) – (3-a)2 =(6a + 8)(a-6) – (3+a)(3-a) = 6a2 – 36a + 8a +48 – (9 - 6a + a2) = 6a2 – 36a + 8a – 9 +6a - a2 =5a2 – 22a – 57

  6. Easy peeezy question # 2 • 1 minute to win it ... 2 people come up (1 pt) Determine whether the pair of functions below are equivalent.

  7. Therefore, these functions are equivalent.

  8. Easy peeezy question # 3 • 1 minute to win it ... 2 people come up (2 pt) Simplify and state any restrictions

  9. A little harder question # 1 • 1 minute to win it ... 2 people come up (2 pt) Factor & Reduce, State restrictions Q: x2 – 7xy + 10y2 x2 + xy – 6y2

  10. x2 – 7xy + 10y2 x2 + xy – 6y2 = (x-5y)(x-2y) (x-2y)(x+3y) = (x-5y) (x-2y) x ≠ -3y, 2y Or y≠ x/2, - x/3

  11. A little harder question # 2 2 minutes to win it ... 2 people come up (2 pt) Simplify the following:

  12. A little harder question # 3 • 2 ½ minutes to win it ... 2 people come up (2 pt) Draw a sketch of the following rational function: Include and label any asymptotes, holes (if there is a hole, figure out the coordinates)

  13. Hole is at (2,1/35) VA: x = -3 and x = -5 HA: y=0

  14. A little bit harder question # 4 • 1 ½ minutes to win it ... 2 people come up (2 pt) Simplify:

  15. Ahh! hard question # 1 • 3 Minutes to win it ... 3 people come up (3pt) Simplify and state ALL restrictions!

  16. Ahh! hard question # 2 • 4 Minutes to win it ... 3 people come up (3pt) An isosceles triangle has the two sides 9p+3. The perimeter of the triangle is 30p+10. a) Determine the ratio of the base to the perimeter, in simplified form. b) If the height is 5 cm. What would be the area in simplified form?

  17. Ahh! hard question # 2 • 3 Minutes to win it ... 3 people come up (3pt) Simplify and state all restrictions

  18. Ahh! hard question # 3 • 3 ½ Minutes to win it ... 3 people come up (3pt) Figure out the ratio between the volume of 2 cones. The ratio between the radii is 5:4 and the height is 2:4

  19. Yikes! Super HARD Question • 5 minutes to win it ... 4 people come up (4pt) Find the difference if If x increases by 1 and y decreases by 1 what is the change in S?

  20. Rules of Factoring! • 1 ½ minutes to win it ... 2 people come up (3pt) When is the only time you can cross out factors? What do you need to find in order to add or subtract rational fractions? Can the denominator of a rational function be zero?

  21. You can only cross out factors when they are being multiplied. One factor must be from a denominator and the other must be from the numerator. (Only can cross out when dividing or multiplying) • In order to add or subtract rational functions you must find a common denominator. • No the denominator cannot be zero. (x/0 = is undefined)

  22. Rules of Factoring! 1 ½ minutes to win it ... 2 people come up (3pt) When is there a hole in a graph? Provide an example. In order to show that 2 equations are equivalent can you sub. in a value for x? Is this a rational function? Why or why not.

  23. If a factor in the numerator also appears in the denominator there will be a hole. • No you cannot sub. in a value for x to show that 2 equations are equivalent. You must simplify. You may use this to show non-equivalence. • No this is not a rational function. Rational functions are composed of polynomials. Numeration is not one.

  24. WINNING TEAM IS ....
