  1. September 28, 2012 Journal Begin to brainstorm ideas for your own short story (this does not have to be in sentence form). Quote “The man who has no imagination has no wings.” –Muhammad Ali Word of the Day The girl was simpering as her crush walked into the room. She was aware that he was looking at her and smiling.

  2. Simper • To smile in a silly, self-conscious way.

  3. Reminders • Re-take the spelling test if you need to (before school, after school, during study hall). • Parent-teacher conferences are a week from Monday. Turn in your missing assignments so that your grade is up to date! • We have a new spelling list; I don’t know when the test is going to be.

  4. Denote • The dictionary meaning of the word. What does it mean?

  5. Connote • The emotional overtones that the word has that are not necessarily described in the dictionary.

  6. Affix • Any addition to a word that adds meaning to the word.

  7. Prefix • An addition at the beginning of the word that adds meaning to the word. • Examples: pre-, anti-, pro-, etc.

  8. Suffix • An addition to the end of the word that adds meaning to the word. • Examples: -ed, -ing, -ment,etc.

  10. Onomatopoeia • This is a word that imitates or suggests the source of the sound that it describes.

  12. Pacing • In books, it is how fast the story moves. • When you are writing an essay, it’s how fast you write.
