Vocabulary #1. Career- A profession for which one trains; a job or series of job that you do during your working life. Experience -Knowledge or skill that one gets from doing, seeing or feeling something. Goal- Aim or purpose; the end toward which effort is directed.

  1. Vocabulary #1 • Career-A profession for which one trains; a job or series of job that you do during your working life. • Experience-Knowledge or skill that one gets from doing, seeing or feeling something. • Goal-Aim or purpose; the end toward which effort is directed. • Qualifications-An ability, characteristic or experience that makes you suitable for a particular job or activity. • Resume-A short written description of your education, qualifications, and previous employment, which you send to an employer when you are trying to get a job.

  2. Vocabulary #2 • Skill-The ability to do an activity or job well, especially because you have practiced it. • Opportunity-The chance to do something you want to do, advance, or progress; the chance to get a job. • Job-Employment; the regular work a person does to earn money; a specific task or piece of work; a specific task or project that is one's responsibility. • Application-A form used to apply for a job. • Reference-A person who knows you and is willing to describe and usually praise you to support you when you are trying to get a job; a statement as to a person's character or ability.

Vocabulary #3 • Benefits-Things that employers may offer you in addition to your wages; for example, health insurance, annual or sick leave, holidays, paid vacation, parking space or monthly reimbursement for parking space area, mileage for travel, and tuition reimbursement • Gross Wages-The total amount of your pay or wages before any deductions are taken out of your paycheck • Net Wages-The amount of pay or wages you take home after all your deductions are taken out of your paycheck • Deductions-An amount of money taken from your paycheck every payday (usually for things such as federal and state income taxes, employment taxes, social security taxes, workers compensation coverage, and health insurance payments) • Internal Revenue Service (IRS)-A department of the U.S. government that collects taxes

Vocabulary #4 • Ability-the power to do something, either intellectual or physical. • Apprentice-a person who learns to perform a certain job through the guidance and experience of a skilled worker. • Career cluster-a group of jobs that require similar abilities and skills. • Entrepreneur-a person who organizes, manages, and assumes the risk of a business or other financial venture. • Leisure-time free from work or duties.

Vocabulary #5 • Life Skills-skills that enable a person to cope with the stresses and challenges of life. • Life Career Planning-the decision-making process by which you identify the alternatives open to in occupational, educational, and leisure areas of your life. • Interests-the likes and dislikes of a person that affect the choice he or she makes. • Life Career Development-self-development over the life span through roles, settings, and events in a person’s life. • Global Economy-the production, purchase, and sale of goods in a world-wide market.

Vocabulary #6 • Classified-Advertisements in a newspaper, magazine, or online, regarding job opportunities; the section of a newspaper, magazine or Web site devoted to advertisements about job opportunities • Attitude-A feeling or opinion about something or someone; a mental position with regard to a state. • Networking-Using friends, family, and people in organizations that you know to help you find a job. • Taxes-An amount of money that is paid to the government, which is based on your income. • Value-How important or useful something is

Vocabulary #7 • Alternatives-The one or the other of two things. • Demand-To ask for with proper authority; claim as a right • Aptitude- The capability, ability, and innate or acquired capacity for something. • Foresight-Care or provision for the future. • Labor-Productive activity, especially for the sake of economic gain.

Vocabulary #8 • Entry Level Job-A low-level job in which an employee may gain experience or skills • Specialize-To pursue some special line of study or work. • Employee-A person working for another person or a business firm for pay. • Standard of Living-A level of material comfort in terms of goods and services available to someone or some group. • Productivity-The quality of being productive or having the power to produce.
