A Dated Industry Gets a Modern Makeover:Spanx refashions By: Curtis “The Dealmaker” S, Andrea S, Sylvia S, & Kayla S
What Spanx is all about! • “Like many women, Sara Blakely was unsatisfied with the way her rear end looked in a pair of snug white pants” • Sliced off a pair of pantyhose & started her own business about 10 years ago
Benefits …yeah • Open many women’s wardrobes up to more diverse clothing options • More slimming look in the rear end and mid-section areas • Boost in confidence
How everything got started • Shape wear fashion began, as many brilliant ideas do, as a problem needing to be resolved • Sarah wanted to create hosiery material that would be invisible under slim-fitting apparel • Meant to “bring a fresh perspective to a market and see where it’s not working as well as it could” • …Developing a product line that refashioned shape wear—a corner of the retail universe that had been sagging for decades
How everything got started, cont. • Marketing: Slick, colorful packaging and kitschy product names like Hide & Sleek, Spanx shape wear appeals to a younger, more fashion-savvy demographic than traditional girdle, which instantly conjures an old-lady image • Appealing to a younger, fashion-conscious demographic
The Numbers …okay • More than $250 million dollars in retail sales last year alone • Oprah Winfrey and Gwyneth Paltrow sing Spanx praises • Initial investment: about $5,000 – The biggest chunk about $4,000 which went to the production of the prototype and packaging • Undergarments range from about $30-$88 for a full bodysuit shaper
In conlusion… • Spanx is a perfect example of entrepreneurship at its finest • Sarah Blakely was able to satisfy an open market through grunt work and clever marketing • Spanx is now sold in most high-end retail stores and boutiques such as Neiman Marcus and Macy’s
