Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities • Created by the United Nations • Protects people with disabilities and their families • Talks about • Respect and independence for everyone • Full participation and inclusion in society • Equal opportunity • Accessibility • Equal opportunity for men and women

Article 19 • Is a part of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities • Has three parts: • Talks about having choices on an equal basis with others • Talks about services and support for people with disabilities • Talks about available and accessible community services and facilities

  4. Equal Choices • This means that people with disabilities should… • Have the opportunity to choose where they live • Have the opportunity to choose who they live with • Not be forced to live in a particular living arrangement

  5. Supports and Services • This means that people with disabilities should have access to… • Support services within their homes • Support services within their communities • The personal assistance needed to help them to live independently and be included in their communities • Supports and services that will prevent isolation and segregation

  6. Community Services & Facilities • This means that people with disabilities should be able to… • Have access to community services and facilities • Use community services that are available to everyone, without any problems • Use community facilities that are available to everyone, without any problems

  7. Community Services & Facilities • These services and facilities include: • Healthcare • Education • Employment • Transportation • Housing

  8. Article 19 • Put together, the three parts of Article 19 mean that people with disabilities should… • Not have to live separately from the rest of their community • Be able to participate fully within the community • Be able to make choices for themselves

  9. Living Independently & Inclusion in the Community • For community inclusion and participation we need: • Supports for individuals • Supports for families • Inclusive services and facilities

  10. Inclusion International’s Global Campaign • Inclusion International wants people to: • Learn about Article 19 • Share experiences about community inclusion and community living • Share strategies to help people live independently in their communities

Inclusion International’s Global Campaign • Through the study, Inclusion International wants to figure out: • What “living in the community” means for people around the world • How we can help to make sure everyone has the opportunity to live and participate in their communities • What is working and what is not working to allow people to live independently and be included
