Community level intervention designed to change norms around condom use Directed at Black MSM who are in a social network with other Black MSM Identifies and trains opinion leaders—trusted and respected members of the targeted social network Opinion leaders are deployed to have conversations with friends and acquaintances to promote condom use and promote self-worth Over time, condom use becomes the social norm among the friendship groups and the social network as a whole Dissemination of d-up! to HDs

  13. Agency Capacity At a minimum, an agency seeking to implement d-up! should have: • Staff trained in recruitment & training • Experience with Black MSM • Access to Black MSM • Access to venues frequented by Black MSM Dissemination of d-up! to HDs

  14. Agency Capacity At a minimum, an agency seeking to implement d-up! should have: • At least 1 social network of Black MSM with 100 or more members • Resources to train 15% of each friendship group as opinion leaders Dissemination of d-up! to HDs

Implementation Steps • Start-up/Pre-implementation • Assess agency capacity • Community Discovery to identify, map out, and target a social network of Black MSM and venue(s) • Implementation • Recruit opinion leaders • Provide 4-session training of opinion leaders • Deploy opinion leaders to have 14+ risk reduction conversations each Dissemination of d-up! to HDs

Step 1—HD hosts a TOF • Health Departments host Trainings of Facilitators (TOFs) • HDs request and coordinate TOFs using a simple online system • http://www.effectiveinterventions.org • http://meetingsmacro.com/profile/web/index.cfm?PKwebID=0x761fd29&varPage=home • These TOFs have reserved slots for HD trainers  Assign at least 2 trainers now! Step 2—Attend a HD-Hosted TOF • TOF is delivered by master trainers • Purpose: • Build HD capacity to disseminate the intervention • Expectation: • HDs commit their trainers to attend a TOT and to subsequently train the intervention • Slots are reserved for HDs: • 6 seats per TOF reserved for HD trainers Dissemination of d-up! to HDs

TOFs Trainings Delivered by Master Trainers: • October: ATL, NYC • Washington, DC – December 2-5, 2008 • Chicago, IL – December 9-12, 2008 • Florida – January 13-16, 2009 • Houston, TX – January 27-30, 2009 • Philadelphia, PA February 10-13, 2009 • NC currently scheduling • More TOFs by master trainers available for scheduling!   26. Step 3—Trainers attend a TOT • Delivered by master trainers • Participants must have attended a TOF before the TOT Dissemination of d-up! to HDs

  27. TOTs • ATL: Week of Feb 23rd • Northeastern US, late winter early spring • West or Midwest, summer • ? Early Fall Dissemination of d-up! to HDs

  28. Step 4—HD delivers TOFs • To begin in March 2009 • All HD-delivered TOFs are to take place by October 1, 2009 Dissemination of d-up! to HDs
