  10. New Math Program Same Math, Different Focus • Creating problem solvers who have the ability to: • apply Mathematics • reason logically • persevere

Writing/Grammar • More writing in all content areas • Short and long writing pieces • Reinforcing grammar through writing (“Focus Correction Areas”) • Writing notebooks • New materials and resources Grammar is important and will be assessed on a variety of other assessments…not just skill quizzes.

How Can I Help My Child at Home? • Expect your child to listen to you & comply to directions the FIRST time. • Have your child in bed by 8:30 p.m. • Give your child a balanced breakfast. • Expect your child to read nightly and do it as a family. • Supervise homework – check, but allow your child to fix errors • Practice vocabulary, math facts, and spelling nightly. • Expect him/her to remember what was learned in class. • Expect neat, carefully done work. • Model how to help your child deal with challenges and stress. • Limit the use of video games, TV, and computer games. • Support the teachers and school by giving additional consequences at home. • Don’t bail your child out. Allow him/her to have the consequences that are a result of HIS/HER behavior or lack of responsibility. • Celebrate real, genuine progress and success.
