  1. Seattle Monorail Impact Project A GIS Study on Impacts of the New Seattle Monorail By: Wiley Coffin, Kyle Crass, Kyle Freeman, Ken Hunziker, Tony Marti

  2. Project Goals • Use GIS to create digital map of proposed monorail project • Link GIS map to census data for public impact analysis • Analyze impact of project on residents near and on proposed monorail route

  3. Using GIS to Create Digital Map of Proposed Monorail Project • Find data sources: • www.wagda.lib.washington.edu • Download appropriate shape files for city of Seattle: Street network, Building outlines, City outline, Shoreline • Import sources into GIS and overlay shape files • Create new shape files of proposed monorail route and station locations • Create shape files in ArcCatalog • Digitize route and station location in ArcMap • Overlay new shape files into ArcMap

  4. Link GIS Map to Census Data for Public Impact Analysis • Download census data from ESRI website and add to ArcMap • King County Census 2000 blocks shapefile and attribute data • Integrate city of Seattle data with King County Census data • Specify City of Seattle data coordinate system • Overlay Census data onto our monorail map • Join attribute table of census data and census block attribute table

  5. Analyze Impact on Residents Near and on Proposed Monorail Route • Create multiple buffers around stations and route • Station Buffers-1km total donut buffer around each station • Route Buffers-250m buffer on each side of route

  6. Analyze Impact on Residents Near and on Proposed Monorail Route • Use Census2000 block data to analyze its spatial relationship to the buffers • Select by Location • Statistics to find sum of population within parameters

  7. Results • Positively affected people • 81,000 individuals living in buffer zones • Negatively affected people • 18,000 individuals living in buffer zone • Negatively affected are also Positively affected • Further information for different population demographics can be determined from this data
