  4. Selecting • We select which sensory data we are going to process. • Things stand out because they are immediate, relevant or intense • Influenced by who we are and what’s going on inside us • Expectations

  5. Organizing Then we organize that data by matching it to known patterns. There are 3 basic patterns Stereotypes– based on societal ideas Personal Constructs – judgment or evaluation based on personal experience Scripts– guides to action based on past experience

  6. Interpreting Finally, we interpret what the data means- - - - - - - - This is always a subjective process of explaining our perceptions. Attributes - - - - - - our explanation of why things happen or people behave the way they do

  8. Improving Perception • Realize perceptions are subjective • Avoid mindreading – don’t assume you know what the other person means • Check your perceptions with others
