  1. WORK The use of force to move an object over a distance

  2. Simple Machine • A machine with few or no moving parts that you apply just one force

  3. REVIEW • What is work? • The use of force to move an object over a distance • What is a simple machine? • A machine with few or no moving parts that you apply just one force

  4. LEVERS EQ: What is a lever and how does it help us do work?

  5. Levers • Brain Pop

  6. Lever • A simple machine made of a bar that pivots on a fixed point. • The fixed point is called a fulcrum

  7. Other Levers

  8. Identify Parts of a Lever

  9. PULLEYS EQ: What is a pulley and how does it help us do work?

  10. PULLEYS • BRAIN POP

  11. Pulleys • A wheel with a line around it. • Two types : • Fixed Pulley – A pulley that doesn’t move. • Moveable Pulley - A pulley that moves with the load allowing for the handler to use less effort. It acts as a second class lever but does not change direction

  12. Pulley Example • Pulley

  13. Pulleys

  14. INCLINE PLANE EQ: What is an incline plane and how does it help us do work?

  15. INCLINED PLANE • A simple machine that is a slanted surface • It changes the amount of force needed, and changes the direction of the force.

  16. INCLINED PLANE • How does is work? • An inclined plane lets you to lift an object by using less force. But you must move that object a greater distance. • EXAMPLE: steep hill vs. moderate hill

  17. INCLINED PLANE

  18. INCLINED PLANE CLIP

  19. INCLINED PLANE

  20. SCREW • A simple machine made of a post with an inclined plane wrapped around it.

  21. INCLINED PLANE or SCREW An inclined plane wrapped around a post with a wedge at the tip. The wedge is the pointed end. The inclined plane is the thread that wraps around the screw

  22. Screws at Work • Screws are used to hold things together.

  23. WEDGE • A simple machine made of two inclined planes placed back-to-back.

  24. Wedge at Work • When we apply force to a wedge, it creates a greater force redirects things outward, away from the wedge’s surfaces • Wedges are use to split, cut, or push things apart.

  25. PULLEY = EASY LIFE • How do Pulleys make our lives easier?

  26. Force vs. Distance • How can trading force for distance make work easier on us? B A

  27. PULLEY vs. LEVER • How are some simple machines alike?

  28. LEVERS CHANGINMG FORCES • How exactly does a lever change the force that is being used?
