  2. WWII ends in Europe on May 8, 1945 • The war in the Pacific raged on • Japanese troops had conquered • Hong Kong • French Indochina • Malaya • Burma • Thailand • Korea • all of the Philippines • and quite a bit of China

  3. This battle was the turning point in the Pacific War • Started on June 3, 1942 • Japan lost: • Four aircraft carriers • 250 airplanes • This was a battle via air The Battle of Midway

  4. Allied forces began gaining territory back from Japan one island at a time • August 1942, Battle for Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands) • Japan’s first defeat on land • By October 1944, Allied forces reached the Philippines at Leyte Island Island Hopping

  7. Japanese used new tactic – Kamikaze attacks • 2,257 Kamikaze attacks during the Pacific war • Kamikaze attacks sunk 16 Allied ships & damaged 80 during Leyte Gulf • Battle lasted three days • Japan lost: • 3 Battleships • 4 Aircraft carriers • 500 Airplanes The Battle of Leyte Gulf

  8. USS BUNKER HILL hit by two Kamikazes in 30 seconds off Kyushu, resulting in 372 dead and 264 wounded.

  9. Critical island for Allies to gain • Allied bomber planes could reach Japan from Iwo Jima • Island had 20,700 Japanese troops in tunnels and caves • Only 200 Japanese survived; 20,500 died • 6,000 U.S. Marines died in this battle Iwo Jima

  10. Marines of the 5th Division inch their way up a slope on Red Beach No. 1 toward Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, defended by seven Japanese Battalions. By nightfall, 566 Marines were killed and 1,854 wounded. February 19, 1945.

April 1945, U.S. Marines invaded Okinawa • 1,900 Kamikaze attacks occurred during this campaign • Brutal fighting, heavy losses • Battle ends June 21, 1945 • 7,600 Americans died, 110,000 Japanese • The vicious, savage fighting was a “chilling foretaste” of what the Allies would face if Japan’s homeland was invaded The Battle for Okinawa
