  1. The Research Path Six Steps Linda ShackleNoble Science & Engineering LibraryRoom 130E480-965-7601http://libguide.asu.edu/engineeringlinda.shackle@asu.edu

  2. Step #1: Get the Assignment OMG!! • That’s a lot of work • I don’t know anything about the topic • I have no idea where to begin

  3. Step #2: Focus Wait a minute – I CAN do this! • I know where to find stuff about the topic • This isn’t as much work as I originally thought

  4. Step #3: Research • Look at one or two resources • Input keywords that exactly match what instructor said • Take the first 5-10 items that show up

  5. Step #4: Write the Paper And you get a … Lower grade than you wanted (or thought you deserved)

  6. What Happened? You left out two steps

  7. The Six Steps • Get Assignment • Focus • Discover • Refocus • Research • Write

  8. Step #3: Discover Discovery is critical; before you can do research, you must learn about your topic.

  9. Step #3: Discover Discover what your topic is all about: • Understand the basic principles • Determine the outstanding issues • Learn the terminology

  10. Step #4: Refocus Read the materials that you discovered so that you: • Know the topic well enough to understand a scholarly article • Can decide which specific issue of that topic you wish to research and write about • Can describe that issue in multiple ways

  11. Step #5: Research • Use multiple, appropriate sources to find scholarly material • Search the sources describing your issue in multiple ways: • The way your instructor describes it (keywords) • The way other authors describe it (keywords) • The way the databases you are using describe it(subject headings, controlled vocabulary)

  12. Do you need to refocus? If the research material you found brings up new issues or indicates that data/information is missing … Repeat Steps #4 and #5

  13. Step #6: Write the Paper Now you’re ready to write your paper.
