  1. Focus • After World War I, the U.S. ratified the 18th amendment in 1919. It established Prohibition, which outlawed the production and sale of alcohol.

  3. Prohibition • 18thAmendment (1919) • Also known as temperance • Began during WWI for rationing wheat • No producing or selling alcohol

  4. Enforcing Prohibition • Volstead Act allows the government to enforce the ban on alcohol

  5. Failure of Prohibition • Speakeasies • Illegal bars and taverns • Moonshining • Illegal production of alcohol

  6. Failure of Prohibition • Prohibition led to violence to protect the illegal trade in alcohol • Led to the rise of organized crime • Al Capone • Led the mob in Chicago, bootlegging and corruption of government

  7. End of Prohibition • 18th amendment is the only amendment to be repealed • Protests against prohibition occurred throughout the 1920s • 1933 Franklin Roosevelt signs a law that allows for production of beer • 1933 21st amendment repeals the 18th amendment
