  1. Scholastic Chess Tournament ODC PTA and VSCA Saturday, October 26, 2013 • What: Two Chess Tournaments – A Scholastic event for school-aged players plus an “Open Quads” tournament for adults and advanced scholastic players. • Where: Old Donation Center for the Gifted and Talented, 1008 Ferry Plantation Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23455 • Who: Students in kindergarten through 12th grade, plus advanced scholastic players and adults in the Open Quads (see below). Players will compete in categories K-5 or K-12 Not-Rated (new players) and K-5 and K-12 Open (for more experienced players). Two or more players entered in the same section from the same school will compete for team trophies. Everyone plays 4 or 5 rounds of chess; this is not an “elimination” event. USCF Membership is required to play in the K-5 Open and K-12 Open sections. For information on the Quads event, see below. • When: Saturday, October 26, 2013. Register online at http://www.vschess.org after October 1, 2013. Advance Registration is $7/player by 7AM on October 24th. On-site Registration is 8-9AM on Oct 26, $14/player. Round 1 starts about 9:30AM. • Why: Have fun, learn, improve students’critical thinking skills, and meet other chess players! Awards in Scholastic sections include: trophies to Top 3 grade K-3 and Top 3 grade 4-5 individuals in K-5 Not-rated and K-5 Open sections; Trophies to Top 3 grade K-8 and Top 3 grade 9-12 individuals in K-12 Not-rated and K-12 Open sections; Trophies to Top 3 Teams in each section; Medals to other high scores and Participation Ribbons to all others. • Open Quads Tournament: For advanced K-12 players and adults: Held at the same time as the Scholastic Tournament, but run separately with different time controls. All players will be rank-ordered according to their ` USCF rating, then divided into groups of 4 players (each Quad has 4 players). Players play a “Round Robin” within their Quad. Time Control is Game-60. Entry is $20 per player. Cash awards, $45 – 1st place; $30 – 2nd place in each Quad. Current USCF membership is required. Round 1 will start 10 -1 5 minutes after the Scholastic Tournament starts. Register online at www.vschess.org. • For more information and to register online, go to www.vschess.org. Registration opens 1 October 2013. Tournament co-hosted by VSCA and ODC PTA. On-site concessions provided by ODC Chess Club and will include pizza.
