  1. www.wrecked.ie Road Safety Programme for 17-24 year olds Speaker: Jenny McLoughlin, Road Safety Authority

  2. Overall aim • To enable participants to develop the knowledge and attitudes to deliver www.wrecked.ie to participants.

  3. Learning outcomes By the end of the session you will have: • Considered the need for www.wrecked.ie and be able to state such; • Viewed 3 sample www.wrecked.ie pieces , considered how they were received in Youthreach centres as part of the pilot and considered how to deliver this in your centre’s; • Discussed what is expected from you when delivering www.wrecked.ie with participants.

  4. Context- Statistics (Thursday morning) • Provisional Fatal Collision Statistics 2011 • Total Persons Killed: 38 • Summary for the year up to 9.00 am February 23rd 2011 • Road Users Killed Pedestrians      9 • Passengers     7 • Drivers 16 • Motorcyclists   6 • Daily Comparison 2010 - 2011 • Total Killed to 23/02/10         27 • SOURCE: www.garda.ie

  5. What is www.wrecked.ie • Multi –Agency effort (The RSA , the Gardaí, education sector, health sector, local authorities and the emergency services. • Produced in conjunction with groups working with 17-24 year olds such as Garda Diversion Programmes, Youthreach and Fás • Utilises real life stories to tell of the true consequences of the life changing events that happen on today's roads. • Provokes a heated and balanced discussion where the target group has a chance to interact about road safety in an open forum.

  6. A website, a DVD, a discussion guide.. • www.wrecked.ie • The ‘Wrecked.ie’ DVD holds 19 testimonials recorded by people who recount their experiences of reckless driving • The discussion guide is a step by step guideline on how to approach a unique discussion for each story. It starts by ‘placing the blame’ with each of the testimonies, outlining the immediate consequences of that particular incident and further exploring the longer term consequences for the both the speaker and the knock on effect to friends, family, emergency services and the general public.

  7. Themes of Clips • High risk groups- males aged 17-24 • High risk groups- people who have just passed the Driving Test. • Joyriding • Driver distraction • Drug driving • The dangers of road use while under the influence of alcohol (drunk drivers and drunk pedestrians) • Buying and using company cars

  8. Themes of Clips • Living with the physical, emotional and psychological effects of a road traffic collision • Driving without insurance • Overcrowding in a car • Driving without a safety belt. • Driving while using a mobile phone. • Modified cars • Driver fatigue

  9. PILOT Programme • 73 participants. • Aged 15-41. The majority of participants were aged 17-24. • 65% male and 32% female.

  10. Key Findings (1) • ‘Wrecked.ie’ changed the way 82% of participants felt about road safety. • Over 75% of participants would recommend the programme to a friend. • ‘Wrecked.ie’ works best with a small mixed group. Females take the programme more seriously. Males take it less seriously in public. Participants learn from each others reaction to the clip.

  11. How to use the resource.. • A skilled facilitator is central to the success of ‘Wrecked.ie’ . Facilitators participated in a ninety minute briefing session on the programme prior to the pilot programme which they felt sufficiently briefed them on the programme. • No more than two sessions should be timetabled consecutively. • Each vodcast and discussion lasted roughly 30 minutes however this was dependent on the amount of discussion each clip generated. The majority of participants reported that the clips kept their attention.

  12. What is expected of you? • Leave your name and address and we will arrange for a pack to be sent out to you; • The resource cannot be distributed to anyone who has not been briefed on how to use it; • Contact the RSA if you require additional training on the pack; • Feedback information to the RSA on how you are getting on and how many young people have participated in the programme.
