  1. Necrotizing Fasciitis “Flesh eating disease”

Definition • A bacterial infection capable of killing, or “necrotizing” tissues including skin, muscle and underlying tissue elements • Commonly classified as monomicrobial infection (a single bacterium strain) or polymicrobial infection (multiple bacteria strains) • More commonly found in those with suppressed immune systems, i.e. patients with cancer, diabetics, AIDS, etc..

  3. The Possible Bacteria Responsible • Group A streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes) Staphylococcus aureus

  4. The Possible Bacteria Responsible • Clostridium perfringens • Aeromonas hydrophila

  5. Symptoms of Necrotizing Fasciitis • Warm, red, painful lump on skin • Rapidly growing “bruise-like” area that expands • Open, oozing sore on skin surface • General malaise • Fever • Chills • Shock

Treatment of Necrotizing Fasciitis • First line of defense is strong broad spectrum antibiotics given intravenously • Surgical debridement of the wound and removal of dead/infected tissues • Skin grafts after infection begins to subside. This will create a better aesthetic outcome and expedite healing of surrounding tissues

  8. Worst Case Scenario s If a case of Necrotizing Fasciitis progresses without successful treatment, the following may occur: • Sepsis, a hyperactive immune response to bacteria, can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure, altered mental status, and poor perfusion of blood to vital organs. If not treated, sepsis can be fatal. • Amputation of an extremity • Permanent disfigurement of the affected area of the body
