  2. HIV/AIDS • HIV: Human Immunodeficiency Virus • AIDS: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome • Type: Infectious Disease • Occurrence: Occurs most often in Far Periphery Countries • Pandemic: 25 million deaths total • 33 million infected and >2 million died in 2007

  3. HIV/AIDSHistory • Relatively new disease • First reported death in 1959 • Epidemic began in 1981 • Initially linked to homosexual men and intravenous drug users • Social stigmatism: due to transmission type

HIV/AIDS Beliefs • I can get HIV from a toilet seat/shared dishes/utensils • I can get HIV from the air • I can get HIV from saliva, sweat or urine • I can become inflected through the mouth or throat • Only gay men, IV drug users and people from 3rd world countries have HIV • All children born from HIV positive women will have HIV • I would know if I have HIV

HIV/AIDS Canada • Infection Rate: • Living with HIV: • Rise from an estimated 57,000 in 2005 to approximately 65,000 by the end of 2009 (14% increase). • New infections: • Estimated range between 2,300 and 4,300 (2009) • WhoisInfected: • Queer Men (44%) • Heterosexuals (25%) • Intervenous Drug Users (21%)
