  2. The German Empire • Territory – federal union of Prussia and 24 smaller states. • Leadership – national government & popularly elected lower house, called the Reichstag.

  3. Bismarck • Fighting the Catholic Church – in continuation to the loyalty to the nation • Laws – for national sickness and accident insurance, old-age pensions and retirement benefits.

  4. William II – the new emperor • Laws – aid the workers and legalize socialist political activities

  5. Republican France • Situation in the country – France is hopelessly divided. • Establishment of absolute parliamentary supremacy under Leon Gambetta • Social reforms under the leadership of Jules Ferry

  6. New split – the Dreyfus case • Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish captain, falsely accused of treason • New split in France, between the Intellectuals, libertarians, and republicans on one side, and the church and the army on the other side • The split revived old republican feelings towards the church, and ultimately the government cut all ties with the religious institution.
