MY OBJECTIVES • Teach 5th grade Common Core Curriculum in an memorable, effective, and fun manner • Help students become more responsible and independent learners • Prepare students for Middle School
Take a few steps back (maybe more) Less reminding Less saving Students learn best from their mistakes You’ll be surprised what they can do… My objectives for parents…
Changing to Common Core: Benefits Challenges Change is hard Materials New way of grading Report card needs to be revised Testing situation • Many teachers have already been teaching this way • Fewer topics to cover • More Depth of topics • More learning • Pushes students to think outside the box
READING • 5th grade Core Lit Books • Bridge To Terabithia • Bud, Not Buddy • My Brother Sam is Dead • Independent Reading Program • The best way to grow and improve as a reader is to READ! • Students read, read, read books at their own independent reading level. • Levels are determined by reading assessments from last year and this year. • Students are “encouraged” to stick closely to their own level • Students will read 30-45 minutes in class each day and should read an additional 20-40 minutes each night
WRITING PROGRAM • Combination of the New York Writing program and my own tested strategies • Emphasize the writing process • Planning • Drafting • Editing • Revising • Final draft • 5th grade standards include: • Personal Narrative • Essays • Response to Literature • Argumentative Writing
MATH • Typical math lesson • Concept taught/practiced in class • Notes/examples are written in math notebook • Assignment started in class, finished as homework • For independent practice, students MUST utilize math notebook at home! • Assessments are based on individual standards • Common Core emphasis: writing thinking explaining problem solving • ***Memorization of Multiplication Facts*** (3rd grade standard)
SOCIAL STUDIESUnited States and it’s History My goal is for them to enjoy S.S. again and learn at the same time. Teaching methods include: • Occasional use of textbook/workbook • Research projects (iMovie Presentations) • Literature ties • Simulations • Walk Through Program

TECHNOLOGY • Computer Lab with Mrs. Leach (Mondays 2:15-3:00) • COW (Computers on Wheels) Tuesdays 1:00-3:00 • IPADS!! All Day, Every Day!

MISSING HOMEWORK • Day 1- Yellow slip (parent notification) • Day 2- Loss of recess • Day 3- Student calls parent…
DISCIPLINE • Strong, clear expectations • I expect them to behave • If problem, the student and I will deal with it first • If problem continues, parent contacted Good behavior=Happy Teacher Happy Teacher=Table points Table points=Table Parties
What you can do… • Provide a quiet place for homework • Listen to your child read aloud • Replenish supplies as needed • Good attendance • Help when needed, but… • Discuss Table party restrictions
