The Legend of The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival - 中秋节 • instead of "man in the moon" it is the Jade 兔子 (rabbit) in the 月 • Chang E and Hou Yi both wanted to be immortal • Chang E receives a pill of immortality from the emperor and Hou Yi steals it • Chang E then tries to capture Hou Yi as she flies towards the 月 • Hou Yi spits out the outer shell of the pill - it becomes a 兔子 and she turns into a toad • 月 is most beautiful (漂亮) during Mid-Autumn

The Legend of 月饼 • The Han people's army sent the message to overthrow the Mongol's Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) by writing it on the paper wrapped around mooncakes (月饼) • The rumor was spread that eating 月饼 was the only way to cure a new winter disease • The message read "uprising, at the night of 中秋节", and 大家吃月饼 ever since

  4. Mooncakes 月饼 (yue bing) • During the 中秋节大家一边吃月饼, 一边看 full, 漂亮的月 • early on during dynasty times 月饼 were served as sacrifices to the 月 • 今天在中秋节people will give 月饼 to one another as presents/gifts • 月饼 are symbolic of wanting to be together during the 中秋节

  5. Mooncakes 月饼 (yue bing) (Cont.) • 十三个月饼 are placed in a pyramid • these 十三个月饼 represent the 13 moons that make up a "complete" year • often they are filled with lotus seed paste, almonds, orange peel, walnut, ham, or a salted duck's egg yolk

  6. Round Things - 圆东西 (yuan dong xi) • 圆东西 = reunion, wholeness (like 月) • another important 圆东西 is the watermelon 西瓜 (xi gua) • different types of fruits: 葡萄 pu tao (grapes), 苹果 ping guo (apples), dates, oranges, pomelos, peaches, pears, pomegranates, as well as nuts Tang-Yuan • boiled water calthrop (type of nut)

  7. Round Things - 圆东西 (yuan dong xi) • paper lanterns in the shape of various favorable animals • pumpkin • river snails • persimmons (which are like big tomatoes) • other traditional 吃反include: cooked taro (potato-like tubers), duck, and duck wine
