  2. Introduction

  3. Introduction

  4. Problem Description • Current reliance on outdated technology • Too many components to interface easily/cheaply • Reliance on dedicated hardware • Multiple wired connections to pan/tilt and camera

  5. Proposed Solution • Develop an image control board with a single I/O connection • Upgrade serial connection to a wireless USB or wireless 802.11b/g connection • Upgrade camera to digital • Implement the pan/tilt features into the new design

  6. Proposed Solution

  7. Demonstrated Features • Single control interface for both the digital camera and pan/tilt unit • Terminal access to pan/tilt and picture commands • Image capture capability to host computer • Completely digital interface

  8. Available Technologies • Data Transmission • MatchPort b/g chip from Lantronix with serial input • Convert signal to be compatible with USB and then transmit via wireless USB connection

  9. Available Technologies • Image Capture Device • ¼ Color CMOS Camera C3088-3720IR ($39.95) • Can be connected to a Microcontroller for processing

  10. Available Technologies • Pan and Tilt Unit • Have several available from Dr. Skaar • SPT100 ($20 without servos)

  11. Available Technologies • Microcontroller • The Arduino Diecimila a microcontroller board using the ATmega168 chip • USB Interface • On board programmer • Open source • C/C++ Based

  12. Engineering Content • Develop platform to integrate available technologies • Implement necessary protocols for hardware interfacing • Provide open source software for camera control and image capture • Manage power concerns should unit become wireless • Develop comprehensive testing to ensure functionality

  13. Conclusions • This project will yield a platform that both updates and expands the technology currently available. • Can be completed on time and on budget.
