  4. HighSchool is a defining point for students in becoming college and career ready and SHS wants to do everything possible to prepare your child for his/her post-secondary options and to give you information to help your child make the best choices for his/her future.

PLAN 2020 • Developed by Dr. Tommy Bice, State Superintendent of Education • His Vision: Every child will graduate and be prepared for college and/or the work force without any need for remediation. • PLAN 2020 objectives: • 1. All students perform at or above proficiency and show • continuous improvement. • 2. All students succeed. • 3. Every student graduates from high school. • 4. Every student graduates from high school prepared. • This vision aligns with ACT’s college and career readiness definition which has • been adopted by the state’s Common Core Standards Initiative.

  7. “New” Graduation requirements for the class of 2017

  8. Why one diploma option? • The purpose for this change is to allow more flexibility for students in pursuing their interests. There are many differences in the courses students may take with this diploma; everyone will not take the same courses just because there is one diploma.

  9. With the “new” diploma option a student can choose any of the following combinations. • 2 Foreign Language courses (same language) and 1 CTE or 1 Arts =3 • 3 CTE courses and no Foreign Language and no Arts course =3 • 2 CTE courses and 1 Foreign Language or 1 Arts course =3 • 1 CTE course, 1 Foreign Language and 1 Arts course =3 • * A student can now graduate without taking either a fine art or a foreign • language. • *Keep in mind some colleges require one and/or two foreign languages as an • admission requirement. • *Students are encouraged to be a completer (take 3 courses in the same career tech • pathway) in a specific career tech area that relates to their career choice. • *This can also help with credentialing in certain career areas.. • -earning a CNA certification in the 3rd level of healthcare • -earning a Servsafe credential in the Human Services class Food & Nutrition

Career Preparedness course • This is the new class required by the state to fulfill the computer literacy and online experience component required for graduation. • The eighth grade course, Computer Essentials, is no longer an option that will fulfill the state’s requirement for computer literacy, but it will count as a career tech course and students will earn 1 Carnegie unit for taking the course.

Scheduling tips • Make class selections reflect college/career choices. • Ex: university/four year college, community/technical/2-yr college, or exit high school and • enter the work force, etc. • Talk to your child’s teacher about the appropriate course selection for math and • English • Refer to the registration guide for course description. • Please enter course numbers on the registration form. • Please sign the registration form (this is required). Students whose forms aren’t signed will be entered into the computer last. • Please make sure to list two alternate courses. We do our best to place your child in the courses he/she wants but keep in mind upperclassmen are considered first.

  12. Northeast Alabama Community collegeadmission requirements HIGH SCHOOL AND GED GRADUATESFirst-time admission to college degree programs at Northeast is open to anyone with the Alabama High School Diploma or an equivalent and proper documentation as defined by the State Board of Education.

University of Alabamaadmission requirements We are looking for students who show a commitment to academics and who welcome the robust exchange of ideas that occurs within a diverse and inclusive learning environment. Typically, the number of applications received exceeds the number of spaces available in the freshman class. In terms of educational preparation, the college preparatory curriculum minimum unit requirements for regular admissions are 4 units of English 4 units of social sciences, including world history or a comparable course 3 units of mathematics (must include algebra I, algebra II, and one unit of either geometry, trigonometry, or calculus) 3 units of natural sciences, including two courses with lab components 1 unit of foreign language 5 additional units of academic courses (We recommend courses in fine arts or computer literacy, with additional courses in mathematics, natural sciences, and foreign language.) Students who exceed the minimum number of units in math, natural sciences, or foreign language will be given additional consideration. The Advanced Academic Diploma awarded by Alabama high schools meets all University of Alabama course requirements. ** This information came from the UA website.

University of Alabamaadmission requirements • What are the admission standards for freshmen? • Each freshman applicant must complete the following core curriculum requirements by the end of the high school senior year:4 years English • 3 years social studies • 3 years math including Algebra I and II, and either Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, or Analysis • 2 years science including Biology and Physical Sciences with Laboratory Component • In addition to an evaluation of core classes, Auburn will consider high school grade point average (GPA), highest composite ACT or SAT scores (writing score from at least one test date), and answers to essay questions. • **This information came from the Auburn University website.
